His background and expertise is in communication and information design, with particular interests in the intersections between traditional, hybrid and electronic communication patterns. Thom has a goal of advancing teaching, learning and research at UB through the effective use of information technology. Thom is the Director of Digital Library Center Projects in the UB Libraries and has worked on projects that range from specialized software to enhance the presentation and exploration of still and time-based images to collaboratories designed to create, manage, and display specialized content. Two projects of particular interest include: the Distributed Learning Project (DLP), a content management system based around the concept of a semantic web controlled by a subject specific ontology with a unique approach to managing dynamic content creation and sharing tool for faculty and researchers; and SimpleTools, a suite of web based applications that allow faculty to remotely and collaboratively organize, encode, markup and present multimedia content for use in teaching and learning. The SimpleTools suite offers role based user management, student tracking, and mastery tools that can be self paced or instructor lead. Thom also manages the Digital Library Grant Program, funded through the UB Libraries, which seeks to provide ten thousand dollar seed grants to University faculty for digital library projects that develop or promote innovative uses of digital repository tools, content management applications, and learning objects.<br/> |
